On July 1st, we arrived in Kampala, Uganda and after meeting the rest of our team from Ukraine, we travelled west for about 8 hours to the Rukungiri district. Our base was in Rukungiri town, but the site where we would be working was actually in Nyarushanje, only about 40km from Rukungiri but due to the state of the roads it took around an hour an half to get there. We partnered with a local organisation WATSAN (Water is life; Sanitation is dignity) and there were 2 parts to our work: a) construction of a water tank for the gravity flow system, and b) education of the local community about hygiene and sanitation
In July 2010, some of our team visited Uganda to see what the conditions are currently like and find out what we could do. You can view their experiences in the videos below.
Water facts
Unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of diseases and kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren't strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses.
Water facts
In Africa alone, people spend 40 billion hours every year just walking for water. Women and children usually bear the burden of water collection, walking miles to the nearest source, which is unprotected and likely to make them sick.
Water facts
90% of the 42,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are to children under five years old. Many of these diseases are preventable.
Water facts
The economic loss due to lack of safe water is $28 billion (5% of GDP). In areas where gathering water is impossible, private water distributors charge full market prices, forcing the poorest households to spend up to 11% of their income on life's most basic need.
